York University’s Honour Court and Welcome Centre is a dramatic architectural expression situated at the Keele Street entrance to the campus. The structure is the first built form that is encountered upon entering the campus and is simultaneously registered by two very different user groups—drivers and pedestrians. Seen from a passing vehicle, its sweeping cantilevers and horizontal elements create the illusion of velocity, while the enclosed inner court is peaceful and serene to create a sense of stillness and respect for the donors who are honoured on the marble plaques that frame the space.
