“We asked them to provide the optimal environment for the human mind to conceive of the universe.”

— Neil Turok, Director, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics

The Stephen Hawking Centre is a major expansion of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario that more than doubles the size of the existing facility. The design strategy focused on creating ideal to spaces for research and quiet spaces for contemplative thought, which are balanced with spaces designed to facilitate interaction. It was paramount that the expansion be contiguous with the existing facility to function as a singular whole. Our team worked closely with PI to ensure that the new facility would be more interactive. This was done by creating central pods of research with visual links to one another and situating interaction areas at half levels between floors. Exterior zinc panels and gold-coloured glass complement and contrast with the existing building.
